Filmmaking – Is it a Serious Profession?

Well , Filmmaking can be described in layman’s terms (without using any high level Gre words) as the process of making a film, from an initial story idea through scriptwriting, shooting, editing and finally distributing. Filmmaking is a platform for all those who can prove their abundancy of creative talents to the world or to his/her country . It is also a profession. Many have a wrong notion that it is somekind of hobby or for people who are lazy to do a job.

It is a highly respected field in other countries such as the U.S. But in countries like India – particularly the South region , this field is not respected as outside. People in the South have a notion that Filmmaking is a lazy route to success. Maybe , it gives money & fame in a shorter period when compared to other fields, but unlike other fields, if you don’t maintain your standard after success , your fame will fade away in the course of time. But the fame you get in other fields won’t fade away just in a course of time. It would be a long lasting one. And my friends, its not a lazy route to success .

A brilliant Iit graduate who is a gold medallist in IT/Molecular Sciences , might not even be able to write a single line of an imaginative story . That doesn’t mean he is not brilliant . He might lack creativity. But the same task of writing a good imaginative story might be completed by a college dropout, which doesn’t mean that since he is incapable of writing a story since he is a college dropout. He might not be brilliant in studies , but that doesn’t mean he is not creative. People choose to come to filmmaking even for a pleasure or interest. But they might be lacking in their creativity, without which he/she cannot survive in this field . The best advice I can give is —–> ” 6/10 people in this world love cinemas. That doesn’t mean those 6 can become great directors or filmmakers. Not even 1/10 people in the world become directors. Some 1/1000000 people resort to filmmaking , who are able identify their creative talents & their undying interest in filmmaking . So please do not dream of coming to films just because to enjoy watching them & you too desire to date hotties or give interviews. Its not a fantasy land , everyone think.

Filmmaking consists of five main stages:

* Development. The script is written and drafted into a workable blueprint for a film.

* Pre-production. Preparations are made for the shoot, in which cast and crew are hired, locations selected, and sets are built.

* Production. The raw elements for the finished film are recorded.

* Post-production. The film is edited, sound effects, music & any computer effects are added, & the film is completed.

* Sales and distribution. The film is picked up by a distributor and reaches its audience.

  • I think it’s like any profession where there are a handful who get lucky and skyrocket upload the ladder, but for the most part the film industry is just like any other. People working day to day to pay their bills, doing all sorts of tasks. As much as filmmaking seems like a glamour job to some, it’s also often over simplified in the public eye. People focus on directors, producers and actors forgetting that film sets employ hundreds. Definitely a serious profession in my view – I’m biased though, I’m an editor.

    Nice blog by the way!
